Barrie Costco evacuated Saturday afternoon

Mapleview Drive East store evacuated as precautionary measure after trash fire

Costco Wholesale in Barrie was evacuated Saturday afternoon after a trash compactor caught fire.

Barrie Fire and Emergency Service (BFES) Deputy Chief Carrie Clark said the Mapleview Drive East store was evacuated as a precautionary measure.

“Some smoke migrated into the building, so, as a precaution, we always tell them to call the station and evacuate the building,” she said.

“But it was contained to the compactor, which was out back.”

BFES received the call at 2:22 p.m.

There were no injuries.

Because there’s food in Costco, Clark said, BFES wanted to make sure the smoke was completely evacuated from the store.

“I believe we’ve called the (Simcoe Muskoka District) Health Unit as well to make sure, because of the food handling,” she said.

Clark said she had no information on how many people were in Costco when it was evacuated.
